Granicus names winners of annual 2023 UK Digital Public Sector Awards

LONDON, UK (18 March 2024) – Granicus, the leading provider of public sector experience cloud tools, announced the winners of its Digital Public Sector Awards. Since 2010, Granicus has honoured public sector entities and employees who have embraced modern technologies that drive awareness of community programs, improve citizen experiences, transform outdated processes and inspire civic action.

Winners by award categories

The 2023 awards span seven categories: Changemaker, Changemakers (team), Community Engagement, Citizen Experience, Digital Achievement, New Initiative of the Year and Operational Efficiency. The winners and runners-up are listed below.

Changemaker Award

Winner: Ian Richardson, Haringey Council
Ian Richardson was the key driver behind he Haringey Council‘s digital transition in the last year and half, which greatly improved online accessibility and technical capability. Working closely with Granicus and Govtech, Haringey digital service redesign improved both resident journey and experience with the council.

  • Runner Up: Melissa Hamblett, Gloucestershire Constabulary
Changemakers Award (Team)

Winner: Digital Services Team, Isle of Anglesey County Council
The Digital Services Team at the Isle of Anglesey County Council implemented govDelivery and govService within a very tight and challenging timeframe, re-working existing forms and processes and developing new ones to take advantage of the platforms’ functionality. By presenting a consistent experience informed by customer insights and feedback; engaging with users, internal services and team leaders at all levels; and ensuring executive buy in, the team produced a digital platform that will enable the council to continue to develop.

  • Runner Up: Durham County Council
Community Engagement Award

Winner: Waltham Forest Council
Waltham Forest Council had significant success in growing and engaging an audience of 170,000 subscribers with content created by a highly innovative team of communication professionals and a highly successful Let’s Talk Waltham Forest campaign last summer to engage residents from across the borough on practical improvements in their neighbourhoods. This campaign was hugely successful, receiving more than 2,200 online resident ideas, 600 written postcard ideas, and 671 top concern surveys completed. The use of EngagementHQ in this campaign was vital and will now be rolled out in other areas to improve engagement.

  • Runner Up: Journeys and Places, Enfield Council
Citizen Experience Award

Winner: Dudley Council
The Dudley Council created MyDudley, a cutting-edge self-service customer portal aimed at cutting costs while improving the citizen experience. . Using their existing govDelivery audience of 175,000 subscribers they delivered 700,000 bulletins throughout the launch resulting in signification engagement and signup to their new myDudley resident account.

  • Runner Up: Bridgend County Borough Council
  • Runner Up: Islington Council
Digital Achievement Award

Winner: Digital Team, Wrexham County Borough Council
Wrexham County developed the online Wellbeing Portal that provides a place for children, young people, and families to access health information and advice. Using technology to transform the way their services are delivered and data to reduce the time to engage and deliver health and social care, their portal has had huge impact on those community members who need the most help.

  • Runner Up: Falkirk Council
  • Runner Up: Islington Council
New Initiative of the Year Award

Winner: Stevenage Borough Council
Commercialisation is at the heart of Stevenage Borough Council’s transformation. The council manages and operates 6,460 garages, renting them out to residents and businesses. In early 2023, it introduced a new digital lettings platform for allocating available garages through a simple registration form. The results were immediate: Empty garages were down to just 12%, leading to £120,000 in increased income.

  • Runner Up: Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman
Operational Efficiency Award

Winner: Renfrewshire Council
The Renfrewshire Council’s Customer and Digital Operations worked with partners in Treasury and ICT to replace outdated, manual ways of working to improve service provision and operational efficiency. Changes were made to ensure families who need these vital funds can apply and receive support with minimal fuss and wait times. The outcome also had a significant reduction on the council resources needed to manage the service.

  • Runner Up: South Central and West
